Do I
need to retrace back same trail from Makalu Base Camp all the way to start
point of trek or is there any other alternatives trail so that I can have some
more adventure and explore new region. Makalu Base Camp Trek can be changed to some
strenuous grade by extending the trip to Kanchenjunga via Lumba Sumba Pass or
to Everest via Sherpani Col.
Sherpani Col - Makalu to Everest Traverse |
Makalu
Base Camp Trek can be done on teahouse basis during season time where as during
offseason normally local people descend down to nearby village to escape from
chilling winter. Shipton La Pass is the most difficult portion of trail as it
passes through technical up and down. Makalu Base Camp is a gateway for Everest
via world’s technical pass of Sherpani Col at elevation of 6200 m. Climbing
guide are needed to fix the rope on pass area, big crew member to brought all
equipment are needed so it will be more technical and more expensive as well as
more challenging. Trail further continues to west col and descends to Honku
Basin then finally traverses Ama Lapcha Pass and descends to Dingboche on
Everest Base Camp Trekking Trail. Pervious mountain experiences are required along
with basic mountaineering skills and use of climbing gears.
Lumba Sumba Pass - Kanchenjunga to Makalu Base Camp Traverse Trek |
Similarly
on east there is another pass called Lumba Sumba that lead to Kanchenjunga North
Base Camp Area. Although not difficult as much as Sherpani Col, it is still
difficult pass to traverse. Ahead from Thudam Village on Makalu Barun National
Park there is complete absence of settlement till Olangchungola. Olangchungola
is the most remote village development committee on Taplejung on Kanchenjunga
Area. Climbing guide is not mandatory however still there might be need of someone
who can fix the rope in case of need. Previous mountaineering experiences are
most for traversing Lumba Sumba Pass. Starting from Kanchenjunga one can trek
all the way to Everest Via Makalu and Sherpani Col that belongs to Great
Himalayan Trail Upper Section.
